Classic Swing Handle White Oak Storage Basket from New England, circa Late 19th – Early 20th Century. Round top rim has each splint reinforced with a nail bent flat on the inside rim like a staple. The square bottom has an open weave which is typical of storage baskets. The basket bows are both notched and nailed for strength and durability. While showing considerable age and wear, there is no breakage to the very durable construction. The base measures 11” x 11”; the top is approximately 14 ½” in diameter, though uneven; the height of the basket is 6 ½” and with the handle up approximately 15”. We purchased this basket from a New England Estate approximately 20 years ago and are now offering it for the first time.

An Intriguing Half-Split Splint Willow Basket by a Gentleman named Matteson from Saunderstown, Rhode Island, circa Late 19th – Early 20th Century. Matteson frequently made a variety of split willow baskets, but the Half-Split Willow weavers, which appear as the equivalent of a Full-Willow Splint on the outside, is quite unique. In the Traditional Form of a 19th Century Gathering Basket with the Handle notched into a Double Wrapped Rim and Raised “Kicked-Up” or Demi-John” Bottom, Matteson has created a quite durable design. The Basket measures 10” in diameter across the top, 6 Ύ” in diameter at the base, 6” in height to the rim, and 10” in height, including the handle. The Condition is Quite Good. There is some minor wear to one weave at the base and some minor splits to the willow, but there are no apparent breaks. Please request a complete set of photos.
